Adapting these 7 habits to your daily life will help you lead a more successful life.
7 Habits For More Successful Life
1. Form Genuine Relationships
Relationships are important in all aspects of our lives. First, we need to build a strong relationship with ourselves in order to have successful relationship with others. This is critical for building strong genuine relationships with our families and friends. Having genuine relationships increases our emotional well being, gives us a sense of stability. Knowing that there’s someone there that we love that we can count on in challenging times gives us a sense of security. Genuine relationships can ease stress and take away loneliness and make us feel like we belong.
Study shows that having genuine and bondable relationship increases our lifespans and an overall happiness and outlook on life. Spending money on genuine relationships and not on material things as the saying goes, buys happiness and not stress.
“Taking care of your body is important but tending to your relationships is a form of self-care too. That I think is the revelation.” Robert Waldinger – Psychiatrist at Massachusetts General Hospital and Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School
2. Exercise and Eat Healthy
We all have heard this enough, “we are what we eat”. Exercise and eating healthy is one of the most important things we should all do. To have a better outlook in our lives and improve our body-image, we should all engage in regular exercise and make healthier eating habit. Exercising lowers the risk of developing some diseases, such as obesity, diabetes and lowers our blood pressure. Exercise also reduces feelings of anxiety and depression.
A Harvard study shows regular exercise changes the brain and improves memory and thinking skills. Dr. Scott McGinnis- Neurologist at Harvard Medical School.
3. Pray/ Practice Mindfulness and Meditation
There are countless proven reasons of why prayers and meditation are beneficial to our mental health and our overall outlook on life.
· Meditation reduces anxiety and depression
· Helps declutter our brains
· Helps us set clear goals
· Builds inner strength and self-resilience
· Increases self awareness
A study from John Hopkins University led by researcher Madhav Goyal found links between meditation associated with decreased symptoms of anxiety and depression and pain in general.
4. Read and Write
Many of us forget that learning is a lifelong process, one which should be honed. One way to do this is by refreshing your mind by reading and writing. You don’t have to be a student or a working professional to do read and write. Pick up a book, a newspaper, a flyer or whatever with words and starting reading. Like the saying goes a rested mind is a rusted mind. Some benefits of reading and writing are
· Reading exercises the brain
· Reading is a form of entertainment
· Reading increases general knowledge
· Reading reduces stress and anxiety
· Writing develops your thought process
· Writing helps your vocabulary
· Writing helps you remember important events and keep recollection
Study shows that reading and personal journaling like writing about yourself, about what you think and how you feel helps tremendously in leading a successful life. Writing is important when setting clear and measurable goals.
5. Show Gratitude and Compassion
Being grateful even in challenging times in our lives builds our self-resilience and our true character. When we lose it all and have nothing, we should think about all the little things that we have and how fortunate we are compared to some people. We should also show compassion towards ourselves and others. Life can be so hard sometimes that our backs is against the wall, lets all remember that there are people in worse situations. Having these qualities shows us we really are as human beings. Gratitude and compassion build self-esteem and makes us happier about helping someone who is less fortunate.
“Gratitude reduces a multitude of toxic emotions from envy and resentment to frustration and regret”- Robert A. Emmons, PhD. a leading gratitude researcher.
6. Sharpen a new Skill / Hobby
Enhance a new skill or refine an old one. Think of things you used to love doing when you were younger. Go back to school and upgrade a course, polish up on a skill, see what’s going on in your community and join groups and activities, boost your creativity by rediscovering what you love doing, try new things, get out of your comfort zone, meet new people and make new friends. Check out the App Meet-up and seeing what’s happening in your community.
7. Practice saying “NO”
This will go a long way for you people-pleasers. All you “YES” men and women. Don’t be an asshole about it, state clearly what your needs are, and know that your needs come first, don’t let others walk all over you. your family and friends may be expecting too much from you, sometimes you can only do so much. Say NO and don’t feel bad about. People who love and care about you will understand, all boundaries should be respected. Be in control of yourself, by saying NO you will have more confidence and more time for yourself, it's likely that you do things for others and forget about yourself.
We all need a little boost in our lives to excel in whatever we choose. Fine-tuning an old skill or developing a new one, we should all be grateful for what we have, from our relationships to our health we can all benefit from adopting these 7 habits and making it part of our daily lives. Always keep God first.
